Freemsonry - What's with the dots?

What's with the dots?

In some Masonic systems, three dots, arranged in a triangular form, are placed after the letters of an abbreviation, such as A∴A∴S∴R∴ or (for Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite) or V∴ for "Venerable."

This tradition dates back to the Grand Orient of France in the late 1700's, and became more common in Masonic bodies originating in continental Europe.

Outside of Freemasonry, the symbol is used in logical arguments and mathematical proof. Known as a "therefore sign", ∴ is generally used before a logical consequence, such as the conclusion of a syllogism.

Shown here is a patent from an Masonic body that makes ample use of the symbol in the officer signature areas.
